The sword is stolen, putting into motion a quest to return the sword that entangles the two pairs of unlikely lovers. Along the way, they encounter Jen Yu ( Ziyi Zhang), soon to enter into an arranged marriage but in love with Lo ( Chang Chen), the leader of a pack of desert bandits. Something else may be pulling him back as well: his love, never expressed, for Yu. The book/film title derives from a Chinese idiom. Something that is hidden is just not in view (literally or figuratively), possibly due to outside factors. He has one unfinished obligation: to avenge the death of his master at the hands of a villain, Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei). Based on the novel by Wang Du Lu, originally released in serialized format from 1941 to 1942, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the epic tale of two warriors, played by Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat. Something that is hiding is taking some deliberate action to hide. Li is tired of killing and wants to retire to a life of meditation, but instead of enlightenment, he has found "endless sorrow" and the feeling that something has been pulling him back. She's visited by Li Mu Bai ( Chow Yun Fat), a retired warrior-hero who has come to give his famous sword, the Green Destiny, to Sir Te (Lang Sihung), a mutual friend, for safekeeping. In CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, Yu Shu Lien ( Michelle Yeoh) runs a company that provides secure transport for shipments of goods to be sold. In another scene, a woman's nipples are exposed through her wet shirt. A lead character is called a "little whore." In one scene, sex is strongly implied between two characters, although there's no nudity.
Although women are treated as equal to or superior to men in judgment and combat, one expresses bitterness that she wasn't permitted to train as a warrior. Major characters are killed, and one death could be interpreted as suicide.
While these battles are mostly bloodless, one character is killed by a blade to the forehead. Courage and sticking to one's values are strong themes throughout the film. The movie, true to the wuxia genre of Chinese martial arts fiction, features highly choreographed fight scenes and battles. In the movie, a Wudan warrior Li Mu Bai is on a course to deliver the legendary Green Destiny sword to his trusted Friend Sir Te.
